GiftsofGab.org is an interim volunteer call-based companion coordination that connects social work students with those in need of social interaction to combat the negative effects loneliness can have on long term health.
Phone calls will last 15 to 45 minutes with the number of times per week based on the companions. Phone calls will consist of light social interaction, such as discussing hobbies, memories, weather, games and helping with any finding referrals for assistance, if necessary. Companions will not be discussing any crude content, exchanging of any goods or financing, and will refrain from projecting political or religious views onto the companions. If at any point an inappropriate topic is brought up, the complaining companion should politely end the call and inform the companion coordinator.
How it works:
If a member of the community is starting to feel lonely or is in need of social interaction, they call the connect line and speak with a companion coordinator. They are now listed as a community companion. They answer a few questions about likes and dislikes, hobbies, preferred call times, the preferred amount of calls, etc.
The coordinator then links a community companion with a student companion. The coordinator sets up times for calls and links the two.
STUDENT AND COMMUNITY COMPANION
The last step is the student companion calls the community companion and they have their set call times/days for weekly phone calls.
